Färgbygge CLT Finish

Background

One of the effects of increased environmental awareness is the architectural style that celebrates and embraces wood as a material, gaining momentum. Simply put, the walls of houses often retain the naturalness of their material by remaining unpainted.

This aesthetic can be seen in all forms of houses, but one of the construction techniques and styles often associated with this trend is cross-laminated timber, or CLT, which is a technique of building houses with solid wood.

Aesthetically, the interior surface of the wood is often preserved, either the wood panel that makes up the entire CLT or by adding complementary materials. This construction technique is very popular in sustainable projects—both among individuals and in the public sector—and the market is growing rapidly.

Even though the wood is unpainted, it needs to be treated for protection in various ways. Färgbygge's Naturum Trälasyr is popular and has great potential to grow in this architectural style area.

Common questions and answers.

What colors can you tint the paint in?

It can be tinted according to the NCS color system, which is one of the most common tinting systems on the market. Therefore, Naturum Trälasyr consists of 2 different bases with different amounts of pigment: White and C-base. This is to match the entire color scale of the NCS color system.

What surfaces can you paint on?

The product is suitable for indoor wood surfaces and can be painted on paneling, rough boards, moldings, and the like. The product is not suitable for damp areas.

How much paint is needed per square meter?

1 liter covers 5-7m².

Does the wood stain prevent yellowing and knot bleed-through?

Naturum Trälasyr both slows down yellowing and prevents knot bleed-through.

What is the durability of the paint?

12 months in unopened packaging and under proper storage conditions (frost-free).

Painting CLT

Do you need to sand before painting?

Smooth surfaces are sanded with fine sandpaper before painting. Ensure that the surface is dry, firm, and free from dirt and grease. Any gaps and irregularities are filled with sand putty and sanded. Do not use synthetic caulking, as there is a risk of the paint cracking.

Do you have to prime before painting?

Trälasyr is both a primer and a finishing paint in one product. If the surface has strong knots, you can prime with Naturum Hartsgrund to minimize knot bleed-through.

Can you influence how pigmented the finished surface will be?

Depending on how pigmented you want the surface, you can choose to paint the surface with 1 coat or multiple coats.

How do you know if the paint is dry?

Generally, respect the drying times indicated on the packaging. A tip is to feel the paint surface with the back of your hand—if it feels "cool," the paint likely needs more time to dry.
